The NFL is back after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions 27-23, despite Chicago being 17 points down during the game. “It was a comeback like I’ve never seen before” -John Barnes, from Chicago, a diehard fan of the Chicago Bears for over 56 years. The Chicago Bears faced the Detroit Lions, for both of teams first game in the 2020 NFL season. It was a game you did not want to miss. The beginning of the game had its fair share of field goal exchanges making it only 3-3 for the first quarter. Five minutes into the 2nd quarter, Lions player Jamie Collins was ejected for head butting a referee, things got a little out of hand. Another exchange of field goals, and it’s tied six to six with two minutes left in the 2nd quarter. The tie didn’t last long, #32 D’andre Swift was swift running into the end zone to Score his first NFL touchdown with 19 seconds remaining. And an extra point brings them the lead, 13 to 6 to end the first half of the game. To start off the 3rd quarter, Lions #88 Tj Hockenson catches a pass in the end zone to make it 19 to 6. And an extra point takes it to 20 to 6. The lions quickly get the ball back and drive towards the end zone, but couldn’t make it far enough for a touchdown, they settle for a field goal. Making it 23-6. “At this point, I thought the game was over, I thought it would be a terrible start to the 2020 season.” - John Barnes. A glimmer of hope shines before us as The Bears position themselves at the 10 yard line to end the 3rd quarter. “I just appreciate their willingness to keep fighting, no one ever had their head down, they didn’t care about the score, they just wanted an opportunity to get the ball” - Matt Nagy, coach for Chicago Bears. At the start of the 4th quarter, the bears are 4th and 1 and they kept fighting. And with a simple play action, they make the first down. And before you know it, #80 Jimmy Graham catches the pass in the end zone, and there is now hope for the Bears to make a comeback in this game. The bears are trailing by 10. The score doesn’t seem to scare the lions, they make their way down the field and thought they would add another field goal for good measure. At 55 yards, the field goal is missed by the Lions, the bears get the ball, with 4 minutes to go, still down by 10. 40 yard catches are made, one hand catches are made, the Bears seamlessly make their way back with a touchdown in the end zone! The Bears have not lost hope! Making it 20 to 23 with 3 minutes left on the clock. “Stafford looking, throws, and is intercepted! The Bears get it back, and it’ll be Kyle Fuller with a huge pick off in Lion territory” Joe Buck, Fox NFL commentator exclaims “ …And theres the long pass to Miller! And Miller is there! It’s a touchdown!… The Bears take the lead!” It seems as thought the Bears had this game confirmed for them. But with seconds left, the Lions approach the end zone very fast. A pass is thrown to D’andre Swift in the end zone, he catches the ball, but does not hold on tight enough, making the game winning touch down pass, incomplete. Making the Bears victorious of the Detroit Lions, 27-23 for their first win in the 2020 NFL season!
