Mikey Wright at The Boost Mobile Pro

Mikey Wright took first place at The Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast, after being out due to an injury. Wright faced Liam O’Brien in the final and won with a total of 15.83 over O’Briens 9.4. In the Australian Grand Slam’s three surfing events, the World Surf League tells us this about The Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast “This is arguably the premier beachbreak on the East Coast of Australia. Swells refract around shallow outer sand banks and then refocus and detonate in hollow sand-bottomed A-frame tubes on the inside. On its day, few beach-breaks can match its spitting peak perfection.” When asked how he thought Wright performed, 22 year old from California, Chad Ames tells us “Mikey came back in full force like he was never out on an injury. He was consistently taking waves and surfing with force as he always does. I love Wright because he always has sharp turns on the waves, long barrel rides, and massive airs. His performance at the Boost Mobile Pro was consistent with his reputation.” Wright fought his way to the top and went against O’Brien in the final. Wright off the bat, took his first wave, and its a 6.0 from the judges. Wright again, takes another wave, and it was a huge double overhead wave. Wright paddles and and stands up in the large barrel of the wave. Coming out from behind the curtain, Wright pulls a strong carving maneuver into the wave, and ends it with a floater. The judges give it a 9.83, the highest score of the competition. At this point O’Brien is in a combo situation, which means he needs two high scored waves in order to beat Wright. O’Brien waited and waited in the water for a good portion of the heat, but couldn’t find the right wave to beat Wright. Giving Wright his first win after a long break. According to worldsurfleague.com Wright said ”I actually didn't surf a heat from April last year until Cabarita [The Tweed Coast Pro]," Wright said, "I'm excited for what's to come.” Wright takes the top of the Jeep Leaderboard after this performance. If Wright keeps up this performance he will make his was into the qualifying series!
